Botho Strauss, one of Germany’s most distinguished contemporary writers, has dramatised the biblical story about Saul, the first king of the people of Israel, and the young shepherd David, who succeeds him. An archaic world that has many things in common with our current one is evocatively conjured up.

Above all else stands the power of music, with its ability to dispel melancholy, as well as to comfort and express a range of emotions. Leoš Janáček’s music touches the core of human emotions in a rarely precise way, giving Strauss’ tragedy of »Saul« an added aesthetic dimension.
