Camille Saint-Saëns is one of the few French composers to have written instrumental concertos and symphonies in Classical style. He dedicated his Violin Concerto No. 3 of 1880 to the violin virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate, and his Symphony No. 3, premiered in 1886, to the composer and maestro pianist Franz Liszt. The organ obbligato he used here gave the work its epithet.
