Robert Schumann

SYMPHONY NO. 3 IN E FLAT MAJOR OP. 97 »RHENISH«
CELLO CONZERTO IN A MINOR OP. 129
SYMPHONY NO. 4 IN D MINOR OP. 120

Dates

Schumann’s impressions of the Rhineland when he took up the post of Düsseldorf’s city music director in 1850 are apparent in the many layers of his Third Symphony. With his Fourth – or actually Second; he drafted it during his »symphony year« of 1840 before a later revision – Schumann linked all the movements as a cycle. In his cello concerto, meanwhile, new colour palettes and moods emerge in almost autumnal hues.
