Saison 2026/27

General music director Christian Thielemann

Since taking up his post as General Music Director of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in autumn 2024, Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle Berlin have developed a mutually inspiring relationship, both in opera and in concert. While last season saw stage works by Wagner, Strauss and Berg under his musical direction, in the coming season he will turn his attention to a rarely performed opera, Engelbert Humperdinck's Königskinder, which returns to the Staatsoper after many years, characterised by great musical beauty and extraordinary expressive intensity. In addition, following the successful performances of the Ring tetralogy, Christian Thielemann will continue his exploration of Wagner's works with revivals of Tannhäuser during the 2027 festival season and Tristan und Isolde

In the Staatskapelle’s symphony concerts, Christian Thielemann will conduct a programme devoted entirely to Strauss and another devoted entirely to Mendelssohn, as well as outstanding works by Mozart, Bruckner and Liszt, whose impressive series of symphonic poems will be continued, as will the exploration of Strauss’s orchestral songs in all their richness and diversity. At the turn of the year, Christian Thielemann and the Staatskapelle will, as usual, discover and present music beyond their traditional repertoire – this time they will devote themselves to film music from Europe and overseas in opulent symphonic garb. The ‘Music from Distant Radio Days’ series will continue, as will the traditional open-air concert on Bebelplatz for ‘Staatsoper für alle’ (State Opera for All). And on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's death, which the music world will commemorate in spring 2027, his monumental 9th Symphony will be performed at the Philharmonie by an orchestra that can look back on a long, ever-renewed Beethoven tradition – as is now the case with and through Christian Thielemann.
