Like hardly any other composer, Peter Tchaikovsky mastered the art of creating impressive tonal structures with the timbres of the instruments and the large late-Romantic orchestra. This is also evident in two works that are rather in the shadow of even more famous ones, his highly virtuosic and at the same time very poetic 2nd Piano Concerto of 1879 and his 3rd Orchestral Suite, composed five years later, which brings together four brilliantly orchestrated movements of very different expression and character.
