200th anniversary of the Staatsopernchor

Symposium on the history and present of the Staatsopernchor with lectures and a round table

Dates

It has been about two hundred years since a choir of professional singers first took part in performances at the Berlin Court Opera. With the premieres of Gaspare Spontini’s »Olimpia« at Unter den Linden in May and of Carl Maria von Weber’s »Der Freischütz« at Schinkel’s new Schauspielhaus on the Gendarmenmarkt in June 1821, today’s Staatsopernchor was born. It brought together permanent singers who have since appeared in musical theatre productions and concerts, with their voices and their personalities. This anniversary is cause for celebration, for the 80 or so members of the choir and their conductors as well as for the Staatsoper as a whole and also the audience. The choir will perform at the FESTIVE OPENING OF THE SEASON, at the STAATSOPER FÜR ALLE, and at several choral symphonic concerts together with the Staatskapelle Berlin with works by Bruckner, Schumann and Mozart. They can also be seen in their true métier on the opera stage on many evenings.
