Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

MASS IN C MINOR K. 427

Dates

Mozart’s two greatest and most ambitious pieces of sacred music – his Requiem and his Great Mass in C minor – were never completed. Written in 1782, at the beginning of his Vienna period, this »Missa solemnis« is probably one of most significant arrangements of the Classical period. Mozart’s inspired piece pairs rigorous compositional craft in the tradition of Bach and Handel with a great emphasis on melody. It is an outstanding testament to his gifts as a composer, with inventiveness to rival his operas and instrumental works of the 1780s.
